The Machines Behind the Machines

Drones, robots, missiles, satellites—every precision component comes from the machine tool that cuts it. Machine tools are called "mother machines." They are the machines that make machines, and they define the ceiling of a nation's manufacturing precision.

In this field, Japan has held a position at the top of the world. Total machine tool orders in Japan reached ¥1.4851 trillion in 2024. Foreign orders alone hit ¥1.0436 trillion—surpassing ¥1 trillion for the fourth consecutive year (1). Japanese machine tools are exported worldwide as the source of precision in factories everywhere.

Why are machine tools strategically important? Because the precision of the final product can never exceed the precision of the machine tool that made it. If you want a component machined to a one-micron tolerance, you need a machine tool more precise than that. The capability of the mother machine sets the limit on the weapons, aircraft, and robots a nation can produce. This is why machine tools are a "foundational technology" that countries guard from a national security perspective.

Worth noting: the cutting-edge mother machines themselves are also supported by countless SME suppliers. Spindles, guides, ball screws, control systems—a single high-precision machine tool is the sum of technologies from small factories each specializing in one component. And that base, too, is exposed to the same wave of aging and succession failure (2).
